Snuggles has created this statement to further demonstrate our firm resistance to pervasive and invasive corporate influence upon and within our personal and professional lives and minds! It does not serve humanity for the media environment we all occupy to be so utterly and completely dominated by ridiculously moneyed interests. Copyright Inflammation / Intellectual Property Policy
Copyright law was initiated in England during early Eighteenth century when Parliament enacted the Statute of Anne. It established a fixed term of fourteen years of protection for copyrighted works (renewable for fourteen more if the author was alive upon expiration) and created a "public domain" for literature by limiting terms of copyright and by ensuring that once a work was purchased the copyright owner no longer had control over its use. Now, in 2003, Disney, who have made killings in recent decades by borrowing from old tales to make new ones such as Cinderella, Pinocchio, Robin Hood, and Snow White, have successfully lobbied the government into extending the copyright protection term for corporate entities from 75 years to 95 years (individuals holding copyrights only got a boost from 50 years to 70 years). As the highly marketable character Mickey Mouse was about to be freed of his 75 year exclusion from the intellectual commons playing field, The Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 and the same Supreme Court who brought us the "G. Dubya" administration have extended the game clock for Disney to score still more points with their star player.
Today's corporations, legal entities, and related groups uphold a typical stance on intellectual property control. They effectively attempt to dictate that all portions of copyrighted media cannot be used by, altered by, or otherwise beneficial to anyone other than the company leaders claiming exclusive ownership and the intended targets of their media barrages, products, advertisements, and public airwave output. And those super-sized earnings bull's-eyes on their board room dartboards depict the vast armies of submissive consumers who faithfully push the corporate profit wagons up the peakless mountain of capitalism. Organizations like the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) have cited outright piracy, product bootlegging, and lost revenue as their motivation to crush or at least obstruct activities like "direct reference" criticism, alongside file sharing and webcasting, with their lawyers and lobbyists in Washington. They have repeatedly and deceitfully contended that artistic appropriation somehow inhibits their ability to sell the musical art which they control although artists who routinely sample fragments are hardly attempting to profit from the marketability of complete works.
Snuggles knows how easy it is for the average media consumer to be unaware of, disinterested in, or just too damn busy to engage themselves in movements counteractive to the sheer, diaphanous force of cultural control and strategic legal positioning presently enjoyed by rich business associations. Although many latent thwarters of such big business sector greed now reside in most online and local communities, large scale communication seems to be blocked to all motives other than profit. Indeed, the only substantial reason commercial TV stations make an effort to broadcast any news items to the general public is that news tends to absorb a reliably captive audience which gives a certain value to the advertisement slots they sell to consociated wealthy companies.
Too often, our "competitors" in the free speech business seem to be saying to their customers, 'unfortunately, all current laws, restrictions, threats, and imbalances must be respected at any and all cost necessary.' But with Snuggles you can say, "let the people do what they want!"
